What is the Masai Mara
Masai Mara has very rich and diverse wildlife and has always drawn the attention of nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe. From the Black rhinos in the north, the great wildebeest migration in the east, to the big five game drives in the south, Masai Mara is home to a number of wildlife conservancies (Mara North, Mara Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Ol Kinyei among others). These places offer some of the best Masai Mara Safari experiences to its visitors.
Wildlife-watching is the main event here, providing for outstanding animal sightseeing opportunities across 1,510 sq km (583 sq mi) of open-game territory. African elephants, Cape buffalo, black rhinoceros, crocodiles, and wildebeests roam the plains in a grand wildlife display.
We pride ourselves on working with some of Masai Mara's best wildlife tour guides who have a breadth of knowledge of Masai Mara's wildlife reserves and conservancies.

A Masai Mara Safari offers Unparalleled Game Viewing Opportunities
The grassy plains and rolling hills make wildlife tours in Masai Mara a magical experience. The open grassland with seasonal riverlets, the Maasai pastoral ranches of the north, the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, elephant, black and white rhinos), the African wild dogs of the Esoit Siria Escarpment, and the dominant wildebeests and over 470 species of birds (migrants and raptors). These are just a few examples of Masai Mara’s richly diverse habitats and a taste of the wildlife experiences you can enjoy.
You might even catch a glimpse of Grant's zebra or the blue wildebeest that have successfully dominated some of Masai Mara’s plains. What you’re unlikely to see is the black rhino, but the rest of the wildlife to be found in the Great Migration path, through which the slow-moving Mara River runs, will more than make up for that!

There is an abundance of wildlife species you can spot across Masai Mara in a range of natural habitats. Here are a few animals and birds worth keeping an eye out for.
Lion are Masai Mara’s largest predetors and can be seen often on grassy plains. The adult male lion boast impressive mane which grow in size as the lion gets older. These male lions have been measured up to a typical head-to-body length of 184 to 208 cm in width and weighing up to 175kg!
Lion can be seen year round. Early July is the best time to watch lion pride. However, the most impressive time of year in the lion calendar is the high season. One of Masai Mara’s most impressive wildlife events. From late March and running up until the end of June is the best time to view this roaring spectacle in Masai Mara National Reserve.
Masai Mara’s only largest land mammal. The elephant can be found in rolling hills and grassy plains throughout much of Masai Mara.
Elephants can be seen throughout the year. It is thought that they look best during the wet months when their skins are thicker and they have their characteristic trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, and massive legs. Elephants have a fission-fusion society, in which multiple family groups come together to socialize.
A female elephant usually has one litter once every four to five years and after a gestation period of 22 months. These young elephants quickly become independent and can build their own herds at puberty.
Elephants need extensive land areas to survive and meet their ecological needs, which includes water, food, and space. During times of drought in Masai Mara, elephants use their tusks to dig holes to find water underground.
Cheetahs are daylight hunters, in the same family as lions and leopards. The Cheetah has distinctive black and gold spotted coat, a small, rounded head that is set on a long neck, special pads on its feet for traction, and a long tail for balance.
These elusive animals but can sometimes be seen in grassy areas in the plains where they live in the trees. They will feed on small- to medium-sized preys, including red squirrels, impalas, birds, warthogs, and wildebeest.
Cheetahs can be seen throughout the year, but the best time can be during the high season when they are out hunting. Cheetahs can also be heard during the mating season when they purr.
